Judge Beryl A. Howell of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia accepts interns in her Chambers for three terms: Spring (January to April); Summer (May to August); and Fall (September to December). Applications for Spring internships must be submitted by the previous November 15; applications for Summer Internships must be submitted by the previous February 1; and applications for Fall Internships must be submitted by the previous July 1. Note, all applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, meaning all available slots may be filled before the application deadline.
Interns in Judge Howell's Chambers receive hands-on experience in legal research and writing, as well as the opportunity to observe court proceedings. All applicants should have completed one year of law school by the start of their internship.
Applicants must submit a cover letter, resume, law school transcript, writing sample, and two references and/or letters of recommendation. Applicants are strongly encouraged to combine the documents into a single PDF for submission.
Interns are expected to dedicate a standard 40 hour week in the Summer and one to two full days per week during the Spring and Fall.
