Policy of the U.S. District and Bankruptcy Courts for the District of Columbia Regarding Refunding of Fees
Pursuant to Judicial Conference policy, refunds of filing fees, including pro hac vice and attorney admissions fees, are generally prohibited. The Clerk’s Office is authorized to approve refunds in very limited circumstances involving electronic payment errors or when no fee was due at filing.
Examples of requests the Clerk’s Office may approve:
• Duplicate filing fees applied to the same case number;
• Duplicate pro hac vice fees paid for same motion with same docket number;
• Full attorney admission fee paid when only renewal fee was due
To request a refund, please submit a detailed explanation and related pay.gov receipt(s) to dcdml_financeoffice@dcd.uscourts.gov. Requests may not be made over the phone. The Clerk’s Office will review the request and, if appropriate, issue the refund.
If a refund is approved or ordered, credit card payments will be refunded directly to the card charged. Direct debit or ACH payments will be refunded by U.S. Treasury check. Refunds made by check may take several weeks to process.
